An important component in the success of our Alliance is ensuring we consistently deliver to a high-quality standard. Vincent Li has been with Piritahi since it was founded in 2019 and is our Quality Manager.
We caught up with Vincent to learn more about his role and what quality assurance actually involves.
Tell us about yourself and your role at Piritahi:
I’ve been at Piritahi since the very start, and we’ve come along way!
As the Quality Manager, I work closely with the wider management team to make sure our projects meet compliance requirements and client quality expectations. Our team regularly works with our internal design and construction teams to identify gaps or defects that may need correcting to ensure the end quality of our work.
Tell us about the projects you’ve worked on overseas?
Throughout my career I’ve worked on many large-scale projects, including the Wheatstone Jetty (Australia), and Mackays to Peka Peka Expressway (New Zealand). One of the largest projects I was involved with was the construction of the Shanghai F1 International Racing Circuit.
This project posed many challenges. Located in the Jiading District of Shanghai, the Shanghai F1 Racing Circuit was to be built on a soft foundation - proving from the get-go to be a geotechnical problem. With a longlist of technical challenges, strict quality requirements, and just 30 months for construction, we built the 5.45km F1 track that met the highest roading quality requirements in time for the scheduled 2004 Shanghai F1.
Working on these large projects has been challenging but has provided me with valuable experience and skills that I’ve been able to apply in my role at Piritahi.
Why is quality important for our programme?
We are laying the foundations for thousands of new much needed homes to be built that must stand the test of time. The importance of quality speaks for itself.
With our work, it usually isn’t until something goes wrong, that you notice that we haven’t done our job right - especially when the crucial work goes into the stuff you don’t see or notice once the work is complete. It’s so important that we meet high quality standards each step of the way.
Quality isn’t just about the quality of the physical works or outcomes either. It’s also about the processes and controls in place. With the multitude of teams, projects, and variety of our work, maintaining consistency and streamlining how we work is a priority to make sure we can deliver on time and avoid as many issues as possible along the way.
What are some challenges you’ve faced working within an alliance on such large-scale projects?
When the Alliance was first formed, our focus was establishing our Quality Management System (QMS) from scratch. As the programme has grown, following the established systems and processes is key to our success. A factor that makes this more challenging is the dynamic environment and variety of teams, so it’s important to have good relationships with people across the Alliance.
Strategically we are also thinking of ways to increase quality awareness to uplift and educate on the importance of quality assurance.
We see change as an opportunity. The Alliance is still growing and evolving, so there are a lot of good opportunities for us to continue improving. I feel very positive about the road ahead and seeing us continue achieving high quality results.
Our strong team at Piritahi come from all walks of life with a wide range of experiences and expertise. We’re lucky to have talented people like Vincent on the team, ensuring we maintain a high standard of work and enabling us to lay the groundwork for more homes to be built for Aotearoa.
