Senior surveyor Barry Fouche completes historic ultra marathon

At 85.9 km long, the Comrades Marathon is dubbed the 'ultimate human race'!

Barry Fouche from our Waikōwhai team recently completed a gruelling marathon in South Africa - we caught up with him before he left to find out more.

Q: Congratulations on becoming Construction Senior Surveyor Barry! Tell us about your journey to this point.

A: It's been a rewarding journey. I've been with the alliance for two and a half years, starting in Mount Roskill before moving to Waikōwhai. Along the way, I've gained valuable experience and enjoyed a supportive environment that helped me grow into my role.

Q: We understand you are preparing for an iconic ultra marathon in South Africa?

A: Yes, it's the oldest and largest ultra marathon in the world, spanning approximately 85.9 kilometres between Durban and Pietermaritzburg with around 21,000 participants this year. It's my fourth time, and I'm aiming to finish in around 10 hours.

Q: What inspired you to take part?

A: Running this marathon is a personal challenge for me and also gives me an opportunity to reconnect with my South African based family after a really long time.

Q: What are the key aspects of your role as a Senior Surveyor and how do you to fit marathon training around your responsibilities?

A: I oversee various aspects of construction projects, from roading sections to ensuring everything is in the right place. It involves a lot of walking, sometimes up to 20 kilometres a day which is helpful training! It requires a lot of attention to detail.

I start my day with a 10-kilometre run before work and maintain a healthy diet. I also draw inspiration from my colleagues at LEAD Alliance; it's a family-like atmosphere and I love it.

STOP PRESS: Barry has just completed the marathon in an impressive time of 10:58:53. Good on you Barry!
